BANGKOK, December 2 (RAPSI) – As of Saturday night, five people have been killed and over 50 wounded in clashes in Thailand between the supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thai PBS reported on Sunday, citing a police statement.
Previous reports had put the death toll at two.
The riots are thought to have been provoked by university students near a stadium in the eastern part of Bangkok, where a multi-day pro-government rally was being held. The students are believed to have attempted to block government supporters from joining the rally on Saturday. A shootout was reported at the stadium entrance late at night, in which one student was reported dead and 35 wounded.
Thai PBS, a government TV channel, is broadcasting from a building that is partially occupied by the protesters, who have ordered the channel’s representatives not to broadcast government announcements and instead to broadcast programs of the Democratic Party-owned Blue Sky satellite TV channel.
Channel 3 said that the building from which it broadcasts had been surrounded by protesters who were trying to break in.
The anti-government demonstrations are said to be moving towards the buildings of the existing six free TV channels in Bangkok. The government has ordered combined police and military groups to protect them.
