MOSCOW, October 11 (RAPSI) – The United States authorities have arrested Svetlana Travis, a Russian woman who has earlier accused New York’s ex-governor Eliot Spitzer of attacking her, for attempted extortion, New York Daily News reported on Tuesday.
According to New York Daily News, in addition to extortion charges, Travis, who is also known as Svetlana Zakharova, has been charged with forgery as well. Allegedly she used personal data of a 67-year-old man from New Jersey to rent an expensive apartment. Reportedly the victim learned about the situation only when collecting agency started calling him back.
In February, Travis claimed that Spitzer attacked her in a luxurious hotel and left for Russia afterward, New York Daily News reported. Spitzer denied all accusations and later filed a lawsuit against Travis on the grounds of “claims of common law fraud, fraudulent inducement and unjust enrichment.” The lawsuit was dropped two months later. Travis was arrested shortly after her return to the country.
