MOSCOW, April 20 (RAPSI) – Over 94,000 women were convicted in criminal cases in 2017 that is 4,300 less than in 2016, the report of the Russian Supreme Court’s Justice Department reads.
According to statistics for 2017, most convicted women (24,000) received suspended sentences, 21,200 female convicts were ordered to pay fines, and about 17,000 were sentenced to prison terms. However, only two persons were given long jail terms ranging from 20 to 25 years, while the main part of imprisoned women (3,500) received from 1 to 2 years.
During the reporting period, courts restricted freedom of about 4,000 women by ordering them to live in certain places, register in special bodies and go on vacation only with the permission of their inspectors. Nearly 11,300 persons were sentenced to community service. Another 255 women were amnestied, and 105 persons more were released from punishment for different reasons, the report says.
Moreover, the Justice Department reported that courts found over 1,100 women insane and ordered them to undergo compulsory treatment.
Interestingly, 538 women were acquitted in 2017 as compared to more than 1,000 in 2016.
