MOSCOW, June 8 - RAPSI. Investigators have ordered a forensic examination in the case of Alexandra Dukhanina, 18, suspected of violence against a police officer during a protest rally on May 6 in Moscow, her defense attorney Alexander Arutyunov told the Russian Legal Information Agency (RAPSI/rapsinews.com).
"The examination is to determine the degree of injuries allegedly inflicted by Dukhanina on a police officer," said Arutyunov, and added that the tests will take at least two or three weeks to be processed.
The defendant's second counsel Dmitry Yefremov told RAPSI that they have filed a motion to terminate the case charging Dukhanina with violence. The defense holds that at the given stage their client may only be tried for "inciting mass riots", which carries a maximum of an eight-year custodial sentence. However, this charge is likely to be contested as well.
Mass opposition rallies began in Moscow on May 6. Clashes with the police flared up during a procession across central Moscow approved by the authorities. Tens of people on both sides were injured. The police detained more than 400 protesters. However, the opposition continued its show of protest by holding a series of "people's promenades".
Two other suspects - Maxim Luzyanin and Andrei Barabanov - have also been arrested in the case.
