On Tuesday, the attorneys of four of the six detained individuals suspected of attempting to assassinate religious leader Mufti of Tatarstan Ildus Fayzov and the murder of head of the Spiritual Muslim Board of Tatarstan, Valiulla Yakupov, appealed the arrests of their clients, Elena Koval, the court's press secretary told RIA Novosti.
On Thursday morning last week, a car exploded in Kazan and injured Mufti of Tatarstan Ildus Fayzov. On the same day, the head of the Spiritual Muslim Board of Tatarstan, Valiulla Yakupov, was shot dead by his home. Two cases in attempted murder and murder have been initiated and consolidated into a single proceeding.
Investigators have classed the case as an act of terrorism.
Dozens of individuals are currently being questioned as part of the investigation into the case, says the Investigative Department for Tatarstan.
Vladimir Markin, the Investigative Committee spokesperson , said earlier that the primary motive for both crimes was the victims' professional activity and their ideological disputes with their opponents.
