ST. PETERSBURG, February 15 - RAPSI. Russia's most popular social network VKontakte has shut down community pages and profiles promoting a "child-free" lifestyle upon the order of the St. Petersburg Prosecutor's Office.
VKontakte is commonly referred to as the 'Russian Facebook,' and one of the country's most visited websites.
The city's prosecutors inspected the website after receiving a complaint from a user which included a list of pages supporting a child-free lifestyle. He claimed that followers of the ideology of "childfree" (voluntary childlessness) promote violations of minors on their pages.
The pages contained abusive information regarding children, such as posts and images calling for unlawful actions to be taken toward children and mothers. In addition, according to the prosecutors, the content "ran counter to family values and fostered disrespect for parents and other family members."
The content contradicts the Federal Law On Protecting Children from Information Harmful to Their Health, the prosecutors said. The website obeyed the order to remove the content and close the pages that violated people's and children's rights.
The federal law came into effect on September 1 and stipulates limitations on publishing material in the media and calls for creating a list of websites that display information harmful to the health of children as of November 1, 2012.
