TOMSK, December 23 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian court convicted a computer hacker who broke into the presidential website to 18 months of probation, a court representative said Monday.

The unnamed man, from the city of Tomsk, pled guilty to hooliganism for hacking into the Kremlin website in May 2012 and causing access problems and information blocking. The court ordered him not to move from Tomsk for 18 months and to check in with authorities once per month.

Russian hackers are among the most active in the world, cybercrime police warned as long ago as 2005, business technology site ZDNet reported. Turkish daily news outlet Hurriyet reported last week that Russian hackers have stolen the personal ID data of 54 million Turkish citizens.

Four of the ten most wanted cybercriminals sought by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation are Russian nationals.
