MOSCOW, October 14 (RAPSI) – New York City Department of Correction has demanded an extraordinary large bail of $100,000,000 for release of Svetlana Travis (Zakharova), a Russian citizen who is charged with attempted extortion from New York’s ex-governor Eliot Spitzer, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday.

Earlier a judge in trial against Travis has set a $1,000,000 bail for her release.

On Tuesday, the criminal case against Travis was heard in a Manhattan court. Bail was set after prosecutor told the court that the defendant may leave the United States. Lawyer of Travis, on the other hand, claimed that his client has no reason to leave.

Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York reportedly closely follows the situation.

In February, Travis claimed that Spitzer attacked her in a luxurious hotel and left for Russia afterward, New York Daily News reported. Spitzer denied all accusations and later filed a lawsuit against Travis on the grounds of “claims of common law fraud, fraudulent inducement and unjust enrichment.” The lawsuit was dropped two months later.

Travis was arrested on Monday shortly after her return to the country. She is also a defendant in another criminal case. According to New York Daily News, in addition to extortion charges, Travis has been charged with forgery as well.

Allegedly she used personal data of a 67-year-old man from New Jersey to rent an expensive apartment. Reportedly the victim learned about the situation only when collecting agency started calling him back.
