MOSCOW, April 17 (RAPSI) – Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science has proposed monitoring the websites that are most popular among school and university students, reads a statement published on the government’s website of planned legislation on Thursday.
The proposal has been made within the framework of the antiterrorism program for the country’s educational establishments.
Other proposed protection measures include regular inspections of school attics and utility spaces, an alert for unattended or abandoned property, and explanatory talks with children.
Schools and universities are to be divided into three groups in terms of security based on recent security accidents, the number of students, and the potential material damage.
Hostages have been taken and terrorist attacks have been carried out at Russian schools on several occasions. The most damaging of these was the Beslan school hostage crisis in the Caucasus in 2004, when terrorists held over 1,100 people, including 777 children, hostage for several days. On the third day of the standoff, Russian security forces entered the building. As a result of the siege, over 330 hostages were killed, including 186 children, and over 810 were injured.
