UN, June 6 (RAPSI, Ivan Zakharchenko) - Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda on Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to take urgent measures to punish those responsible for military crimes against civilians in Darfur, Sudan.
Security Council Resolution 1593 referred the situation to the ICC in 2005. "Regrettably, each briefing has been followed by inaction and paralysis within the Council while the plight of victims of crimes committed in Darfur has gone from bad to worse," Bensouda stated in her 17th briefing to the UNSC.
"We have done our part and it is up to this Council to live up to the legitimate expectations of Darfur's victims, namely that individuals alleged to be responsible for their daily suffering are brought to justice," Bensouda said.
In March 2009 the Hague court issued an arrest warrant for a group of Sudanese officials, including President Omar al-Bashir, on charges of genocide and military crimes. However, none of them have been arrested, while the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate.
According to Bensouda, "300,000 people have been displaced in the first five months of 2013 alone, more than were displaced in the last two years."
Hostilities between the government army and numerous rebel groups, which demanded a change of regime in Darfur, western Sudan, started in 2003. Two years ago Qatar initiated peace talks between the warring parties, which resulted in the signing of a peace treaty with two largest rebel groups. Other rebel groups, however, continue fighting in Darfur.
