KIEV, April 18 (RAPSI) – Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office has suspected Viktor Yanukovich, former head of Security Service Aleksandr Yakimenko and former head of the Interior Ministry Vitaly Zakharchenko of founding a terrorist organization, according to a statement released by the office’s website.
The Posecutor General's Office accuses Yanukovich, Yakimenko and Zakharchenko of conspiring with the army to commit the act of terrorism that lead to the deaths of protesters in the February shootout on Instituskaya street in downtown Kiev.
Last November a political crisis broke out in Ukraine when the cabinet of ministers announced that the country’s integration with the EU will be suspended. Mass riots dubbed Euromaidan swept through Ukraine and escalated to mass clashes of nationalist protesters with the police in February.
On February 22, Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (parliament) impeached Viktor Yanukovych and amended the constitution. Presidential authority was assigned to parliament speaker Alexander Turchinov and a presidential election was scheduled for May 25.
Russia has denounced the events in Ukraine as an armed coup. President Vladimir Putin said during a news conference in March that Yanukovych remains Ukraine’s legitimate president.
