ULYANOVSK, August 1 - RAPSI. A letter by opposition leader Alexei Navalny stating accusations against Investigative Committee head Alexander Bastrykin was delivered to the Kremlin administration and will soon be forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office for review, Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
Navalny alleged in his blog that Bastrykin and his wife have set up a company in the Czech Republic, a NATO member country, and that Bastrykin even has a residence permit there. Navalny also stated that he had written to the Kremlin in this regard.
Bastrykin has denied the accusations and has attributed them to the recent attacks against him as a result of the investigation into various high-profile cases, including the case of the May 6 Bolotnaya Square riots.
The Investigative Committee once again leveled charges against Navalny in the Kirovles timber company case on Tuesday, accusing him of organizing large-scale property theft. He has been allowed to remain free on his own recognizance.
Navalny previously served as an adviser to the Kirov governor. Investigators have looked into his work in this area and have concluded that he persuaded the Kirovles management into signing an unfavorable timber contract.
Navalny was also involved as a witness in the May 6 riots case. Clashes with the police flared up by the time a permitted opposition procession across Moscow reached Bolotnaya Square. Tens of people on both sides were injured. The police detained over 400 protesters.
In June, investigators searched the homes of organizers and participants of the rally. These included the homes of Navalny, the Udaltsov, Ilya Yashin and Boris Nemtsov.
