MOSCOW, June 30 (RAPSI, Oleg Sivozhelezov) – A court in the Astrakhan Region sentenced Russian citizen Sultanbek Azamatov to 7 years in prison for attempt to join the Islamic State terrorist organization prohibited in Russia, according to the statement published on the court’s website on Friday.
The man, born in 1982, was found guilty of attempting to become a member of a militant group not specified in the federal laws and participation in a militant group in a foreign country with aims conflicting with interests of the state, the statement reads.
The Islamic State, an organization which is prohibited in Russia, is currently one of the major threats to global security. Within the last few years, these terrorists have managed to seize large areas of Iraq and Syria. The organization is also attempting to spread its influence on North Africa – particularly, Libya.
